Water Safety on the NSW Northern Rivers

Byron Bay, Ballina, Yamba and the Tweed — drone shark surveillance and event water safety on the far north coast.

Servicing the Northern Rivers region

The Northern Rivers — from the Tweed Heads border down through Byron Bay, Ballina, Evans Head and Yamba — is one of the most surfed, swum and visited stretches of the Australian coast. It also has one of the most active shark populations on the eastern seaboard, which is why drone surveillance has become standard at events here. Coastal Water Safety Australia deploys to the Northern Rivers for surf comps, ocean swims, triathlons, council shark monitoring and search and rescue support, working alongside the NSW DPI Shark Management Strategy and the local SLSC branches.

The Northern Rivers coastline

Byron Bay's Main Beach, Wategos and The Pass attract international surf events and serious swim crowds. The Pass is consistently in the top-three NSW shark-sighting locations on the SharkSmart map. South of Byron, Lennox Head's reef and Ballina's beaches host their own event calendars, and the Yamba-Angourie corridor runs surf comps year-round. Our drone crews are familiar with the local species mix — bull, tiger, white and bronze whaler all feature — and our pilots are experienced in operating in the higher visitor density and tighter exclusion zones the Northern Rivers requires.

Local conditions & hazards

Confirmed shark activity at The Pass, Tallows, Seven Mile Beach Lennox and Shelly Beach Ballina; the Brunswick Bar; the shifting bar at the Richmond River entrance; powerful rips at Tallows and South Ballina; and significant crowds at major events that compound every one of these. Our drone crews provide species-level identification in real time so beach decisions are based on data, not guesswork.
